St Mawgan lose in seven goal thriller as Newquay teams shine in weekend sport

St Mawgan were on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller as Sticker Reserves left Trevarrian with a 4-3 win on Saturday.

Mawgan surged to a three-goal lead, but a strong Sticker comeback saw the visitors leave the north coast with all three points, pushing the hosts to sixth in the St Piran Premier Division East.

Ash Bicknell’s side now takes a break from league action before facing Mullion in the Tracey Banfield Cup this weekend, followed by back-to-back fixtures against Saltash Borough.

In Division One East, St Newlyn East remain top of the table despite their 100% start to the season coming to an end with a 2-0 defeat at St Teath.

Newquay Reserves had better fortune, defeating St Breward 3-0. Sam Fearon opened the scoring for the Peppermints, with Jay Davie adding two more.

Elsewhere, Goonhavern Athletic edged Lostwithiel 3-2 to progress in the Cornwall Junior Cup, as did St Mawgan Reserves and Newquay Thirds.

Switching to rugby, the Newquay Hornets secured a victory without throwing a ball thanks to being given a home walkover win against struggling Veor.

The points move them into second place in Cornwall Counties Two, while sixth-placed Perranporth were beaten 29-21 at home by Falmouth.

In hockey, Newquay Ladies continued their winning form. The first team triumphed 7-1 at Devonport Services and remain level on points with Women’s Division One South leaders, Falmouth.

Newquay Seconds also enjoyed success on the road, winning 3-1 at Bude, while the Thirds secured a 4-0 victory at Falmouth, now trailing leaders Truro by just three points.
