Newquay Surf Life Saving Club has been awarded £500, thanks to players of the Newquay Lottery.
The club secured the funding in this year's Community Grant Scheme funding round. They plan to use the money to provide vital qualifications such as lifeguarding courses, Coaching Levels 1 and 2, tube rescue, and first aid training for their member volunteers and youth members. In its application, the club said the "courses will empower young people by building their confidence, skills, and future opportunities." They are also aiming to develop youth members into volunteers or coaches, providing them with a pathway to personal growth, leadership, and community involvement.
The club, which boasts hundreds of members, is based within the Fistral surf complex and meets there throughout the summer. During the off-season months, sessions are held at Newquay Leisure World.
Three grants will be awarded by the Newquay Lottery to local community groups, charities, clubs, and not-for-profit organisations in the Newquay area between now and Christmas.
Radio Newquay Director and co-founder Mark Chapple said: "Every week we give away money to players of the Newquay Lottery who are supporting Radio Newquay and local good causes. We're a not-for-profit radio service, and the Newquay Lottery helps maintain the station, which is primarily staffed by volunteers with just two part-time staff. Their support means the world to us, and the Community Grant Scheme is our way of giving something back."
The Newquay Lottery was launched in 2020 and now boasts hundreds of winners. To play or find out more, sign up at NewquayLottery.com.
