Another major closure of the Newquay to Par rail line will take place later this month as the next stage of the Mid Cornwall Metro (MCM) project progresses.
Work is currently taking place at night to construct a 400-metre passing loop at Goss Moor, which will allow long-distance and local trains to run simultaneously. However, from Monday, 24 February, to Sunday, 23 March, the line will be closed for round-the-clock construction.
Buses will replace trains during the month-long closure. Services will operate from St Austell to Newquay, stopping at Luxulyan, Bugle, Roche, St Columb Road, and Quintrell Downs. Most replacement buses will not stop at Par, so passengers will need to change at St Austell. For full details, visit GWR.com/Upgrade.
The first phase of the project will introduce hourly trains later this year, doubling the current service. By 2026, direct trains will run from Newquay to Falmouth via Par, St Austell, and Truro.
MCM is funded by the Government and Cornwall Council and is being delivered by Network Rail in partnership with the council and GWR.
Network Rail has already completed two key upgrades for MCM: a second platform has been restored at Newquay station, and 500 metres of new track and a new crossing have been installed to bring trains to it.
